Final permits issued to demolish Ceresco Dam

CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - The local townsfolk are sorry to see it go, but apparently the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is glad to have Enbridge take down the Ceresco Dam in Calhoun County. The DEQ has now given the final permit to take out the rest of the dam and restore the river to as natural a state as they can. Enbridge Spokesman Jason Manshum says dam removal will begin this spring, and restoration would follow.

It’s been a very long time since the 174-year-old dam actually powered the mills it was built to serve, and while the local community may have their identity wrapped up in the dam, the state considers it a hazard to navigation, an obstacle for fish and for recreational boaters.

Last fall, Enbridge cut notches in the dam to allow the river level to drop slowly.
