More frozen pipes reported in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Everyday in Kalamazoo and surrounding communities, more reports come in of homes losing their water service to frozen pipes.

They have received over 223 since the problem began.

Sue Founes, the Director of Kalamazoo Public Services says they are beginning to cut into the numbers significantly.

She says they tried to order new thawing equipment but so has every other community and they are all sold-out, so they have made six units of their own to thaw pipes.

It can take anything from 1 to 8 hours to thaw a line and they can now do 10 to 15 a day.

She says its important that home owners run a thin stream through a faucet to keep the water moving for the next few months.

Their long range forecasts show it will be a cold spring and it will take a while for the ground to thaw.

It’s been suggested that you catch the water in a bucket or a basin and use it for something else.
