WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating General Motor's handling of a recent ignition switch recall. On Wednesday, NHTSA officials announced they were opening a formal investigation into GM's handling of the recall of more than 1.6-million cars due to the faulty switches.

Thirteen deaths and 31 crashes in which air bags failed to deploy have reportedly been linked to the issue. The NHTSA says it's looking into the timeliness of GM's recall to determine whether the automaker property followed the legal process and requirements for reporting the recall.
