LAKE SUPERIOR (WKZO) -- There is a race against time and Mother Nature taking place in the shipping channels that link Canadian ports with the power plants and factories that ring Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.Lt. Commander John Henry is on board the Bristol Bay one of four Coast Guard Cutters clearing a path through the ice for the freighters. He says the precious cargos of coal and heating oil are needed in the south to keep people warm this winter. He says they may have just days left to get the big ships through.
UNDATED (WKZO) -- Here is a cheesy little bit of news. Kraft Foods says there is a shortage of Velveeta products which may continue over the next few weeks. They didn’t give a reason, but it may be the increased use of the processed American Cheese product during the holidays and the playoffs that can drain the nation’s Velveeta reserves. It only becomes a crisis situation if the shortage continues as the Super Bowl approaches and there isn’t enough of the gooey dip to go around.Americans may be forced to use real cheese.
HOUGHTON (WKZO) -- An Astrophysicist and his students at Michigan Technological, who perhaps had too much time on their hands decided to look for evidence of time travelers, but it turned out to be a waste of time.Robert Nemiroff and his students searched through tweets and facebook posts from 2011, searching for a Dr. Who or Marty McFly who might have mentioned Pope Francis or the Comet Ison before either came on the scene.
They figured a time traveler would come back with special knowledge and want to brag about it, but they didn’t find any references to either.
They presented their non-finding at the American Astronomical Society meeting this week.
