BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- The City of Battle Creek's new Fire Chief is 42-year-old Dave Schmaltz, who is currently the Fire Chief in Defiance, Ohio.
He will actually be coming back to the area when he assumes his new job in the Cereal City on February 3rd.
He calls Coldwater his hometown and the place where he began his career in firefighting.He was picked from a list of three finalists after interviews and background checks.
Members of the selection committee says he stood out as knowledgeable, personable and the best fit for the department and the community.
He replaces Larry Hausman who retired in April.
He will oversee a staff of 75 that not only provides fire suppression, but medical and hazardous material responses, rescue, and other emergency services.
He is married and has two children.
