ELKHART, INDIANA (WKZO) -- They are calling it a new strategy to deal with gunman threatening mass murder, but it’s actually as old as the hills.

When confronted with a gunman randomly killing strangers inside a Grocery store Wednesday night in Elkhart, Indiana, the first arriving officers didn’t set up a perimeter and call for SWAT, they went inside and stopped the killing.

Sgt. Trent Smith with Elkhart Police says they confronted the gunman in a grocery aisle and shot him when he tried to shoot them.

Smith says 22-year-old Shawn Bair had already killed two women. He says the bravery of the officers involved saved lives.

It’s the latest strategy being taught to police agencies to deal with what they have learned from the most recent school and theatre shootings, to go in and stop the killers immediately.
