KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Reaction to the Governor’s State of the State address from local lawmakers has been predictably partisan.
Republican State Representative Margaret O’Brien of Portage was surprised that the Governor mentioned legislation that she had co-sponsored just the day before to assess students, teachers and administrators. She agreed that Michigan is the comeback state.
Democratic State Representative Sean McCann of Kalamazoo was disappointed that the governor took credit for job gains that really belong to the auto industry and the Obama administration, and the apparent lack of commitment to restoring money to public schools and state colleges.
Republican Representative Aric Nesbitt of Lawton thinks there is a lot of merit in his proposals to fund programs that make pre-school available for all children and will help seniors stay in their homes longer.
The speech started late and ran long last night, and many lawmakers made only token appearances at the after speech receptions.
