OAKLAND COUNTY (WKZO) -- Six people have reportedly died from the flu in West Michigan, all of them are over 50.
Three young adults have died in Oakland County near Detroit, all in their 20’s as the number of new infections continues to grow.
It’s really impossible to know how many adults statewide have died from complications of flu, because the virus is often just one of the problems the patient is dealing with.
There is no reporting mandate for adults, only young children. One infant has died in Michigan and 20 Nationwide.
Dr. Victoria Dooley says the obese and pregnant seem particularly vulnerable this year.
Nearly half their worst cases are overweight. She says it’s not too late for a flu shot.
The CDC says about 40% of the population has been inoculated, but that percentage shrinks among young adults.
