HAMTRAMCK (WKZO) -- A Hamtramck woman was killed in an attack in Afghanistan on Friday.
Basra Hassan, who worked as a nutrition specialist for UNICEF, was one of three American citizens and one of 21 people killed in a bombing at a popular restaurant in Kabul. The attack was one of the deadliest against foreign civilians since the war started 13 years ago.
According to UNICEF spokeswoman Sarah Crowe, the 59-year-old Hassan set up nutrition and monitoring stations in Afghanistan and helped set up a number of therapeutic clinics there. Born in Somalia, Hassan obtained her master's degree from Eastern Michigan University and has two sisters who currently live in Michigan.
