MICHIGAN CITY, IN (WTVB) - They were still clearing away the wreckage this morning from a deadly chain reaction collision that occurred yesterday afternoon just south of the Michigan border on I-94. It involved dozens of vehicles, including 15-semis along with 20 to 30 cars near Michigan City, Indiana. Among the dead are a man and his wife from Grand Rapids. The third victim was from Chicago.
Indiana State Police blame heavy lake effect snow with whiteout blizzard conditions. Residents who live as far away as two miles heard the collisions. The accident happened in the eastbound lanes, which means that all the victims were headed into Michigan when the crashes occurred. Besides the fatalities, 15 to 20 were hospitalized, some of them in critical condition.
