BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- For some the appointment of Battle Creek Interim Police Chief Jim Blocker to take over the job permanently may come as a surprise, given all the problems the department has had over the past few years.
But to others, it may be no surprise at all, given the politics in city hall and the natural advantage that an inside candidate has.
Often the appearance of internal candidates on the list of those applying will keep other qualified candidates from even applying.
Interim City Manager Susan Bedsole says Blocker was the stand-out candidate, and was also recommended by their executive headhunting firm.
Blocker has been with the department since 1997. He says he hopes to make better use of technology to ease a manpower shortage in the department, restore the confidence of the residents and make the department more community oriented.
The Appointment takes effect immediately.
