DETROIT (WTVB) - The Tigers' 4-game winning streak was stopped last night by the Rays, who beat Detroit 6-3 at Comerica Park to even up the 4-game series at a game apiece. Tampa Bay knocked around Tiger starter Drew Smyly, who fell to 4-8 with a rocky five-and-a-third inning performance, giving up five runs on seven hits. The Rays’ offense clubbed seven extra-base hits for their sixth win in seven games. Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez had to leave in the eighth because of recurring soreness in his side, a problem that made him miss 3 games earlier this week against Oakland. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said Martinez for sure won’t play this afternoon and it will be day-to-day going forward. Friday’s defeat dropped Detroit’s lead in the American League Central down to four games over the second place Royals, who beat the Indians 7-1 at Cleveland. Anibal Sanchez goes to the mound today for the Tigers against Tampa Bay with the first pitch in Motown set for 4:08 p.m.
The White Sox beat Seattle 7-1 last night in Chicago while the Cubs defeated the Nationals 7-2 in a day game in Washington.
