LANSING (WKZO) -- Legislation is under consideration that would give terminally ill patients the right to participate in experimental drug trials before the drugs are approved by the FDA. There are public hearings scheduled for later this month as lawmakers review bills that make Michigan one of a few states enacting a "right to try" law.

In the "Detroit Free Press," Arlene Kalley a breast cancer patient says, "Patients with a life-threatening illness and no other hope in standard drugs don't have the time to wait for clinical trial data like researchers do." She says that many patients are willing to take a risk when it comes to trying an experimental drug.
