COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) -The Branch County jail isn’t nearly as crowded today as it was in the middle of last week. Corrections officers say a number of prisoners were released after their sentences were reduced ten percent Wednesday and the inmate count went down from 160 to 145 the next day. The lockup was still officially overcrowded to start today with 147 prisoners behind bars with 142 the rated capacity of the outdated facility.
Sheriff John Pollack declared an overcrowding state of emergency back on June 23rd. The guidelines indicate that with an emergency, the population be cut back in no later than 4 weeks to 90% of the rated capacity, or 128 inmates, possibly with court approved sentence reductions. In April, an overcrowding emergency, the second of 2014, ended with no early releases needed.
