UPDATE: Branch County Jail still overcrowded, but numbers eased by early releases last week

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County jail remains overcrowded today but not nearly as jammed as it was earlier this month. Undersheriff Keith Eichler tells us that 18 inmates were released last Wednesday, shrinking the jail population down to 145. Four inmates had 10% sentence reductions for retail fraud, marijuana possession, and drug charges. Another two were set free based on time already served. 4 were being held for the Friend of the Court. Bonds were reduced on four other offenders. Two had their time reduced on probation violations. Another two had personal recognizance bonds set for drug test violations.

The lockup was still officially overcrowded to start today with 147 prisoners behind bars with 142 the rated capacity of the outdated facility. Sheriff John Pollack declared an overcrowding state of emergency back on June 23rd. The guidelines indicate that with an emergency, the population be cut back in no later than 4 weeks to 90% of the rated capacity, or 128 inmates.

In April an overcrowding emergency, the second of 2014, ended with no early releases needed.
