PENN TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- Cass County Deputies have ordered an autopsy on an apparent drowning victim to determine if some other problem may have caused his death.
67-year-old Vincent P Churak of Evergreen Park IL lived on Donnell lake and was an avid swimmer.
He was using a paddleboard when he fell off for some unknown reason.
Observers called 9-1-1 saying they saw Churak struggling in the water and calling for help at about 10:30 Sunday morning.
Some of them tried to rescue Churack, but could not reach him before he disappeared under the surface.
Attempts were made at a quick rescue, including having an air ambulance fly over to try to spot the victim but it didn’t work.
The Cass County Dive Team finally pulled his body from the water 2-1/2 hours after he disappeared.
He had a life jacket on the paddleboard, but wasn’t wearing it.
