PHEONIX, AZ (WTVB) - The Detroit Tigers last night started a 7-game road trip with a win as they held on to beat Arizona 4-3 to open a 3-game series with the Diamondbacks. The victory for first place Detroit improved their lead in the American League Central to 6-and-a-half games over the second place Indians with Cleveland’s loss at Minnesota.
Torii Hunter belted a two-run homer for the Tigers and Austin Jackson added a solo shot for a 3-0 lead after three innings. Arizona rallied to tie the game at 3-3 after six innings but Detroit scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the seventh when Jackson led off with a double, and after advancing to third on a lineout, scored easily when Miguel Cabrera sent one high off the wall in straightaway center. Cabrera was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double, and the call on the field stood when replay was used to determine if it was a home run.
Justin Verlander scattered three runs, six hits and three walks over six and two-thirds innings in winning his 13th consecutive decision against National League teams. Joba Chamberlain hurled a scoreless eighth, and Joe Nathan worked around a two-out single in the ninth to post his 20th save. Chamberlain has recorded an American League best 20 holds. Rick Porcello gets the start tonight for Detroit against the D-Backs.
The Chicago White Sox beat the Royals 3-1 last night in Chicago while the Cubs were idle Monday.
