Enbridge oil spill: four years later

MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) - Four years ago today Marshall was known for its fountain and its architecture, and a day later it became the site of one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. History. Four years ago this coming weekend, the 6-B pipeline ruptured.  Enbridge operators didn’t know what to make of the pressure fluctuations so they kept the oil flowing. Hours later by the time a utility crew discovered Canadian crude oil surging down Talmadge Creek and into the Kalamazoo River, over 800,000 gallons had gushed through the gash in the pipe.

Michigan State University professor Steve Hamilton, who works at the Kellogg Biological station, says it turned out to be a billion dollar mistake. He says they are finishing up the oil recovery portion of the cleanup with the delayed dredging in Morrow Pond. He says there will always be some oil out there, but he thinks the river is safe again to live on and play around, just as long as you don’t get any of that oil in your mouth or eyes.
