Preliminary exam today for Lions Den stand-off suspect

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The man accused of taking a hostage during a barricaded standoff with police last week in Branch County is scheduled to appear in District Court today for a preliminary exam. 39-year old Joseph Leiffer of Carleton, Michigan is charged with felony fleeing and eluding, felony firearm and kidnapping in connection with what happened July 22nd at the Lion’s Den Adult Entertainment Center north of Coldwater. That’s where he surrendered peacefully to authorities and there were no injuries as he released the female clerk from the store. The standoff lasted 3 hours.

 Leiffer is being detained on $250,000 bond. He also faces faces prosecution in Steuben County, Indiana for his alleged armed robbery at the CVS Pharmacy after which police say he fled to Michigan sparking the police chase up I-69 that ended at the Jonesville Road exit close to where the Lion’s Den is located. 

Leiffer is also named on a felony warrant for embezzlement out of his hometown of Carleton where he was the former Village Treasurer.
