KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- About two-hundred friends, family members, and city officials turned out on Race Street Sunday evening, at the scene of the murder of Michael Day to remember his life, celebrate his 14th birthday and mark his death Sunday evening.
So many people appeared at the location in the Edison Neighborhood that Public Safety shut down the street to make room for them all.
The student at Milwood Middle School was shot to death last Monday as he rode his bike on the sidewalk.
The crowd shared prayers, held lit candles, launched red and white helium balloons and sang “Happy Birthday” for the boy they called Mike Mike.
A small temporary memorial of candles, teddy bears, a football, a bible and a small white cross now sits where his body fell.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vanguard Church on Fulford St. Funeral Services will be held at the Nottawaseppi Community Center in Fulton Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting is expected to announce soon whether he will pursue adult or juvenile charges against the 15-year-old who is under arrest for the homicide.
