THREE OAKS (WKZO) -- A southwest Michigan woman has been ordained as a Catholic Priest by Bishop Joan Houk of the Roman Catholic Womenpriests, a group of Catholic women who disagree with Vatican opposition to the ordination of women.
75-year-old Lillian Lewis said she was forced to move the ceremony from her church to her back yard because of harassment and intimidation by other Catholics.
Kalamazoo Bishop Paul Bradley said he would place any Catholics who attended the ceremony outside of full communion, saying it will “undermine the unity of the Church”. They can regain their status simply by confession.
He says excommunication for Ms, Lewis is automatic.
Lewis plans to start a ministry with her husband, who is a Dominican priest.
About 100 people attended the ceremony under a clear blue sky on Saturday.
