NEW BUFFALO (WKZO) -- One person is dead, one in critical condition and two are missing after a small private boat caught fire on Lake Michigan and sank overnight.
Officials say the four were making an overnight run from New Buffalo to Burnham Harbor near Chicago, and had gotten about half a dozen miles from their destination when things on board the 30-foot power boat began going terribly wrong.
The four on board had to abandon the burning and sinking boat, putting on life vests and climbing into the 60-degree water.
The boat apparently did not have a radio, so no one knew they had sunk.
A charter fishing boat spotted one of the victims bobbing in the water early Sunday and pulled him on board, immediately notifying the Coast Guard, who mounted a much larger search.
They found a second victim, a 20-year-old woman, who was alive when she was brought to the hospital but died from hypothermia.
Two others remain missing.
