KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo City Commissioners have unanimously approved new zoning amendments that will limit where stores that sell alcohol can locate in the city.
The changes were triggered by concerns that the stores were clustering in certain parts of the community, more often than not in poor and minority areas where people loiter and often become a police problem.
It won’t affect existing stores, but will impact any new stores seeking a location in city limits. New stores would not be permitted within half a mile of existing stores, or within 500 feet of schools and churches.
Such limits already exist for hard liquor stores. This would expand it to stores that are only licensed for beer and wine sales as well.
