KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Toren Hains will remain in prison for the rest of his life, for a disturbing case of child abuse that resulted in the death of 14-month-old Zoie Grace Johnson.
Hains claimed he innocently but accidentally dropped the child while doing laundry in late December of 2012 at the apartment he shared with the child’s mother.
He was caring for the child while her mother worked.
Doctors testified there was clear evidence the child had been shaken or otherwise intentionally abused, the kind of injuries that could not be suffered in a simple fall.
Autopsy tests also revealed the child had alcohol and marijuana in her system at the time of death.
A jury found Hains guilty of felony murder and first degree child abuse.
The felony murder conviction means mandatory life without parole in Michigan.
