DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers lost their fourth straight last night, leaving 11 runners on base to help Toronto take down Detroit 8-2 at Comerica Park, where the Blue Jays go for the 3-game sweep this afternoon. The Tigers have dropped 12 of 16, shrinking their lead in their American League Central to just 3 games over the White Sox. Detroit trailed only 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when they failed to score after loading the bases with no outs and then Toronto broke it open late against the Tiger’s bullpen, adding 3 runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello was saddled with the loss, falling to 8-3 after being charged with 3 runs on six hits over 7 innings. Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler had solo home runs to produce the two Tiger runs. R.A. Dickey and 4 Toronto relievers combined to hold Detroit in check, allowing seven hits while the Tigers were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Justin Verlander goes to the mound for Detroit this afternoon against the Blue Jays.
The Chicago White Sox beat the Dodgers 2-1 last night in Los Angeles while at Wrigley Field, the Cubs downed the Mets 5-4.
Former Major League player, manager and coach Don Zimmer is dead at the age of 83. Zimmer passed away Wednesday in Florida following heart surgery in April. He had been involved in professional baseball since 1949.
