DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers continue to struggle as they suffered a season high fifth straight loss yesterday afternoon in a 7-3 setback to the Blue Jays, who finished off a 3-game sweep at Comerica Park. Detroit’s 3 week slump has seen them lose 13 of their last 17 with their lead in the American League Central shrinking from 7 games down to just 2-and-a-half games over the second place White Sox, who were idle Thursday.
The East Division leading Blue Jays, meanwhile, have won 5 straight and 19 of 23. Yesterday, they hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning off Justin Verlander to break a 3-3 tie, adding to Toronto’s major league high home run total of 87 so far this season. Verlander’s third loss in his last four starts dipped his record to 6-5. The Tigers tonight open a 3-game home series against the Boston Red Sox with Drew Smyly on the mound for Detroit.
In yesterday’s MLB amateur draft, the Tigers selected speedy California high school centerfielder Derek Hill with the 23rd overall selection.
And Cubs fans have something to cheer about for a change with a 7-4 win last night over the Mets giving them a 3-game sweep of the series at Wrigley Field.
