LANSING (WKZO) -- A new “Right Start” report shows that a disturbing number of children are being born to unwed mothers who live in poverty and are passing that legacy onto their children.
The report focuses on 15 cities, most of them in southern Michigan. And includes Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Holland.
Jane Zehnder Merrell says 2/3rds of all births in the city are to unwed mothers. It’s one in three in the suburbs.
She hopes lawmakers will look at the data and respond appropriately.
She says 18% of young moms don’t have high school diplomas, a disturbing number smoke, get little pre-natal care and that all results in babies born prematurely.
