ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- Raising children is tough, especially it you are a single working parent. When that child gets sick, it can get a lot more complicated.

Dr. Andrew Hashikawa at the Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor says too many of them are ending up in the emergency room because parents can’t get in to see their pediatrician, and they need a note from their doctor to get day care to take them, or for their boss to get out of work.

He conducted a study and found that daycares were refusing to take children with sniffly noses and pink eye, items that should not be excluding them from day care.

He says parents and daycare operators need to be better trained on how sick a child should be before they need to be kept at home, so they don’t needlessly wind up in Emergency.

A visit to an emergency room can wind up costing a lot more than a missed day at work, even if the child just has the sniffles.
