SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO) -- Nucleqr Regulator Commission officials held their annual meeting in South Haven to brief the public on the operations at the power plant in Covert.
They say the bottom line is the plant is safe, and it’s safer now after a couple of years of intense scrutiny by NRC inspectors.
The NRC’s Ken O’Brien says folks in the area have nothing to worry about.
Benton Harbor State Senate candidate Betty Pierman says she is not assured, living half way between Palisades and Cook Nuclear and hearing what goes on in Covert. She says she is frankly worried for the safety of the region.
NRC officials still have some concerns that people at the bottom of the command structure at the plany do not feel free to report problems to their supervisors, and the plant’s management has until the end of the year to address the issue.
The Palisades Nuclear reactor is slowly being brought back up to full capacity after a five day shut down to repair a seal in a pump.
The reactor was taken off line last weekend to address the problem, which had been detected in one of five pumps that help keep the reactor cool.
The outage lasted about 5-1/2 days.
