COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says an Ovid Township man faces animal cruelty charges after one horse died and nine others that he owned were discovered underweight and in distress. Several calls were received by Central Dispatch and Sheriff John Pollack reporting horses with no food or water at the address of 404 Warren Road. One of the tipsters reported that he had been dropping hay and water to the animals since the first of February and said he had photographs of the animals. Deputies set up a meeting with neighbors of the suspect and callers who agreed to make statements about the situation. On February 25th, deputies met with a witness who was leaving the horses more food and learned of the deceased horse found in a barn. The remaining horses were removed from the property and the incident remains under investigation.
33-year old Geoffrey Eickmann was arrested by Angola City Police at his place of employment. He waived extradition and was taken to the Branch County Jail and booked on the charges on Friday. He awaits formal arraignment today in District Court.
