Michigan's same sex marriage ban on trial in Detroit courtroom

The Voters of Michigan approved the ban on Gay Marriage, putting it into the State Constitution in 2004.
The Voters of Michigan approved the ban on Gay Marriage, putting it into the State Constitution in 2004.

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Michigan’s case defending the state’s ban on same sex marriages got off to a shaky start when their first witness was not allowed to testify Monday in Detroit. Sherif Gergis is a Princeton doctoral candidate who has written about the history of traditional marriage.  Federal Judge Bernard Friedman says he may be an expert some day but isn’t yet and dismissed him.

The state’s second witness is the author of a controversial survey of adults who said they had gay parents.  The study found they were less likely to be educated, more likely to have had repeated sex partners, drug use and problems with the law.  University of Texas Sociologist Mark Regnerus admits there were some gaps in the study and simply concluded that more study is needed.  He will be cross-examined today.
