LAKELAND, FL (WTVB) - Tiger’s shortstop Jose Iglesias could be sidelined for most of the season with a painful shin injury. The 21-year-old has been dealing with the nagging shin splints for years. Iglesias is scheduled to see a foot and ankle specialist in Colorado on Tuesday. Detroit acquired Iglesias from the Red Sox last season in a three-team deal that involved the Chicago White Sox sending Jake Peavy to Boston. With Iglesias out, the Tigers could turn to another former Red Sox infielder in Stephen Drew. The 30-year-old Drew is still a free agent four months after turning down a $14.1 million dollar qualifying offer from the Red Sox.
In Grapefruit League play yesterday in Viera, Florida, the Tigers got by the Washington Nationals 2-1. Justin Verlander struck out four in five scoreless innings for Detroit in his second spring start, giving up just one hit and a walk facing a Nationals split squad.
Detroit will host Washington this afternoon at Lakeland.
