COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County released 13 inmates with sentence reductions less than a month ago because of jail overcrowding and already the county lockup has returned to being over capacity. 25 people have been booked into the jail this week since Monday.
Sheriff John Pollack said the situation has left the courts none too happy and the judges don’t want to make early releases. They believe these offenders need to stay behind bars. Pollack said the corrections officers at the jail tell him the inmates are a handful and present a lot of problems. The courts advised the Sheriff that those who were given the early releases were told that if they got into any trouble while they were on the outside that they would be brought back and be required to serve their maximum time.
The inmate population to start the day this morning was 142, exactly the rated capacity.
