Personal Property Tax clarification passes Michigan legislature

LANSING (WKZO) -- Governor Rick Snyder is expected to soon sign a package of bills that are designed to ensure local governments don’t lose funding when the personal property tax is eliminated.

The tax is paid by businesses on equipment, and lawmakers voted two years ago to phase it out. Local governments balked, as police and fire department funding in most of the state is dependent on those taxes.

Voters will also have their say on the issue in the August election when a question will be on the ballot to allow the state to redirect revenues from the use tax to local governments.
