UNDATED (WHTC) -- Consumers Energy is warning Michigan residents to beware of a phone scam. The typical scam works like this: a caller, who speaks both English and Spanish, demands payment for a Consumers Energy bill within an hour. The person is instructed to purchase a specific prepaid credit card and to call an 866 toll-free number to pay their bill using the prepaid card. Consumers Energy wants you to know that they never demand payment over the phone using only a specific card. Those who believe they may have been a victim of the scam should call their local police department or contact Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.
