LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Fourth and eighth graders in the state have some work to do to catch up with the national average when it comes to proficiency in math and reading. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress only 30% of Michigan's eighth graders and 37% of the state's fourth graders are working at proficient levels in math. This compares with a national average of 34% for eighth grade and 41% for fourth grade. When it comes to reading, the state's children fall below the national average of 34%. 33% of eighth graders and 31% of fourth graders in Michigan are reading at or above a proficient level.
