ALBION (WKZO) -- A historical marker in Albion claims the first Mothers Day was held at theMethodist Episcopal Church in that Calhoun County town in 1877.
Local legend claims that it all began when Pioneer Juliet Calhoun Blakeley took to the pulpit to campaign for temperance.
There had been other events celebrating Mothers before, but this was the first held every year on the second Sunday in May. Her two son’s, both traveling salesmen spread the word about a celebration of all the things that Moms do.
In the early 1900’s Anna Jarvis, at another Episcopal Church in West Virginia picked up the campaign as a salute to her mom, getting the state to declare their own Mother's Day first.
Then other states and eventually the U.S. Congress would follow.
And you probably thought it was invented by a greetings card company.
