NEW BUFFALO (WKZO) -- Two girls are safe at home, thanks to their cellular service.
They fell asleep on a raft on Mother’s day while enjoying the nice weather and drifted out into Lake Michigan off New Buffalo.
They didn't have life-jackets or paddles but one of them did have a cellphone.
The two 14-year-old girls just weren’t paying attention and fell victim to the unforgiving currents and drifted about 900 feet from shore, too far out to be heard from the beach.
They reportedly called their parents who dialed 9-1-1.
The girls were also able to wave down a private boater who kept an eye on them until rescuers arrived.
