LANSING (WKZO) -- Approving tax hikes is something politicians usually try to avoid during election years, but polls have shown that voters are more angry about bumpy roads and potholes than adding a few cents to gas prices.
The House has approved a gas tax hike that would raise gas taxes 1-penny per year per gallon, or 5%, whichever is lower depending on fuel prices and other factors.
State Senators are now saying that won’t raise enough to get the job done, and may raise it higher.
Committee deliberations on the House bills in the Senate begin Tuesday.
Potholes can do more than just rattle your teeth and bend your rims.
Police in Alpine Township say a motorcyclist was killed after his bike hit a monster pothole on a rural road and he crashed.
It happened Sunday morning on Peach Ridge Avenue just north of Eight Mile.
Matthew Denny was riding with three other bikers on their way to the Blessing of the Bikes in Baldwin when he hit the pot hole, lost control and crashed.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Denny was not wearing a helmet.
