COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Witnesses have been told to appear today in Branch District Court for a preliminary exam in the case of a Coldwater man charged with open murder in the death of a 7-month old boy this spring. In July, 43-year-old Steven Shaw was found competent to stand trial after he underwent a forensic psychiatric exam at the request of his attorney.
Shaw is being held without bond. He was living with the mother of the victim Carson Burm and was alone with an older sister in an apartment in Coldwater when City Police say Shaw called 911 for emergency assistance on May 28th. The infant boy had stopped breathing and was pronounced dead the next day after being airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Authorities said the trauma suffered by the child did not match Shaw’s description of what happened, and he was arrested June 1, 2014.
