LANSING (WKZO) — It will never win a prize as the prettiest fish in the Lake, but a Middleville man can now claim the state record for the biggest Freshwater Drum ever caught in Michigan.
Mark Leep was spear fishing on Gun Lake in January when he snagged the big fish.
At 28.6 pounds it beat the previous record set in 1973 by over 2-1/2 pounds.
The DNR believes the fish may have found its way into the inland lake in Barry County through illegal stocking, because the fish normally resides in the big lakes.
It took a month to verify and double check the numbers.
