DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – – Legislation will be introduced in the Michigan legislature next week to require parents or guardians who home school to register their children’s names with the local school district. State Representative Stephanie Chang of Detroit and Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield outlined the details of the bill Friday morning.
Chang says the measure is not aimed at discouraging home schooling, but a way to keep children safe from abuse. Both Chang and Sheffield cited Stoni Blair and Stephen Berry whose bodies were found in a freezer inside their mother’s home last month. The children were home schooled by their mother Michelle Blair who is charged with murder.
