KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department has issued an explanation of an investigation of the Department Conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor, after media reports that the investigation had taken place and found problems with the way the Department was paying overtime.
The investigation involved the unauthorized time Deputies were working and the scheduling of road patrol hours and stemmed mainly from the system the department was using to recordthe hours that deputies worked.
It had been in place for decades and was based largely on the honor system. Since the investigation, the Department has installed a time clock.
The investigation continues. The Department has reimbursed some Deputies for unpaid time ranging from 5-minutes to several hours, according to Undersheriff Pauli Matyas.
The funds have come from surplus revenue the Department did not spend in 2014.
