FENNVILLE (WKZO) — Every year, Fennville and Saugatuck high schools raise money for the Wes Leonard Heart Team when they play basketball, and Fennville has finally claimed victory. Leonard’s brother, Mitch, credits his brother’s spirit for getting him to take a timeout to set up a buzzer-beating shot to send the game to overtime on Friday.
Wes Leonard collapsed and died from an undetected enlarged heart right after hitting the winning shot to lead Fennville to a perfect 20-0 season in 2011. The money raised when the rival schools meet is donated to purchase defibrillators for schools across Michigan.
