LANSING (WKZO) –The MIRS News Agency reports that Sen. Tonya SCHUITMAKER and Rep. Mike MCCREADY who chair the senate and House Higher Education committees asked Governor Snyder to increase funding for colleges by 15%, to restore the money he stripped from them in the first year after his election.
That did not happen.
Snyder is proposing a 2% increase, but only if the Universities don’t increase tuition by more than 2.8%.
Mike Boulus of the President’s Council says that’s barely above the inflation rate, and they will be lobbying for more money and a higher cap from legislators.
Schuitmaker says that in the 1970’s, 80% of University funding came from the state and 20% from tuition, and now that’s reversed and its putting college beyond the reach of many families.
