KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – In one of the more contentious issues the Kalamazoo Commission has dealt with in recent memory, the commission voted narrowly to approve Design Review Standards for a portion of the city’s south side, including the commercial zones along Portage and Westnedge.
The proposal has been trimmed down to just require that new businesses and existing businesses doing major renovations, meet certain standards in their design.
Over a dozen residents stood up to oppose it, saying they needed more time for input and for businesses to adjust.
Commissioner Cooney agreed more dialog was needed, but the majority felt they had heard enough,
Commissioners Anderson pointing out that all they are talking about is how commercial buildings look.
Commissioner Bob Cinabro pointed out that included in the motion was a requirement that they review the ordinance on an annual basis to make sure it is functioning as intended.
