CHICAGO (WKZO) — Sampling results from the Chicago Area Waterway System by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicate the presence of environmental DNA from Asian carp closer than ever before to Lake Michigan. The Alliance for the Great Lakes says eDNA from the invasive fish was detected near the lock in downtown Chicago, less than one city block from the open waters of the lake.
The environmental group remains critical of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Great Lakes-Mississippi River Interbasin Study from last winter, which it says gave “no clear recommendation” for the next step to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.
