KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Monday is the day the nation celebrates the birthday of martin Luther King Jr., but events begin the day before.
Sunday the 29th Annual Celebration sponsored by the City, WMU, KVCC and the Northside Ministerial Alliance will be held at Galilee Baptist Church at 4 p.m.
Monday has become an annual Day of Service to honor the message of Dr. King begins at 8 a.m. in City Hall with registration. Hundreds of Volunteers will be assigned to various non-profits in the community for one day service activities. The opportunities range from clean up and construction projects, to office work and volunteer services in homes for the aging.
A convocation will be held at Stetson Chapel on the Kalamazoo College Campus at 10:50. Keynote Speaker will be the President of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP, Dr. Wendell Anthony.
Also planned on Monday at 11:00, Bronson and Borgess Hospitals will hold their annual MLK celebration at the Lawrence Education Center this year. James L. Liggins, Jr., associate attorney with the Kalamazoo law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., is the keynote speaker. The program begins at 11:45.
Monday afternoon at 3:30, a March will begin at the Flagpoles at WMU, trail down through the Kalamazoo College Campus and then downtown to Martin Luther King Jr. Park for speeches at 4:30.
Students around Michigan will have a chance to see the new Oscar nominated film about Martin Luther King Jr. on the day we celebrate his birthday for free at Celebration Cinemas in West Michigan. All they need to see is a student I.D.
