LANSING (WKZO) — The first EPIC-MRA Poll on the May road funding proposal suggests that right now it would pass, but just barely, 46% to 44%.
When the pollsters gave an explanation of what the ballot item would mean, support dropped to 37% and opposition grew to 49%. A 14% swing.
This is early data and the Governor’s office has just squared away a contract with a firm to run their campaign backing the proposal, but it suggests that the more people know about the complicated plan, the less they like it.
An identical poll conducted in Kalamazoo County by EPIC MRA showed Kalamazoo voters were still supportive of the sales tax hike by a slim 2% margin even after hearing a description of the plan.
The local poll was commissioned by KRESA, which was considering their own May first request for funding.
There is still a lot of campaigning ahead.
