BANGOR (WKZO) — A couple from Downers Grove Illinois had to abandon their boat after it caught fire on Van Auken Lake near Bangor Sunday afternoon.
The 22-foot long Cobalt motor boat may have had a leaky fuel line and that resulted in a fire in the engine compartment.
Right around 3:30 the boat’s engine began belching out black smoke and flames.
The two occupants grabbed life preservers and went overboard. They were picked up by other boaters.
The fire was extinguished by Personal Watercraft operators who swamped the boat and put out the flames.
An investigation is underway.
